Domain basics

What is a TLD?

A top-level domain is the final part of a domain name: .com in flashdomains.com, .ke in example.ke, or .app in product.app. It sits at the top of the public DNS naming hierarchy.

What a TLD actually does

The TLD does not hold your website. It identifies the registry namespace in which your domain is registered and helps DNS route the lookup through the hierarchy.

1

You enter a domain

A browser or app asks DNS where the name points.

2

DNS follows the hierarchy

Root servers direct the lookup toward the TLD's name servers.

3

Your records answer

Authoritative DNS returns the web, mail or other records configured for the domain.

The main kinds of TLD

Country-code TLDs

Two-letter namespaces assigned to countries and territories, with policies managed locally.

.ke · .sk · .de · .au

Generic TLDs

Purpose-led namespaces ranging from established classics to descriptive newer endings.

.com · .org · .app · .shop

Sponsored TLDs

Namespaces with a sponsor representing a defined community and its policies.

.aero · .coop · .edu · .travel

Infrastructure TLD

A technical namespace used for Internet infrastructure rather than ordinary public branding.

.arpa

TLD, domain, URL: not the same thing

.com

The last label in the domain name.

Domain name

flashdomains.com

https://flashdomains.com/tools

A complete address that can include protocol, domain, path and parameters.

How to choose a TLD

  1. 01

    Audience

Choose a local cue for a local market or a broadly recognised ending for a global one.

  2. 02

    Meaning

Make sure the full address sounds intentional and matches the site.

  3. 03

    Rules

Check eligibility, acceptable use and technical requirements.

  4. 04

    Cost

Compare renewal, transfer and redemption prices—not only year one.

Top-level-domain questions

Who creates and manages TLDs?

IANA coordinates the DNS root zone and records each delegation. Individual registry operators manage names within their TLD under the applicable policy framework.

Can a domain have more than one dot?

Yes. blog.example.com contains a subdomain. example.co.uk uses a second-level namespace beneath the .uk country-code TLD.

Does the TLD affect email?

The extension does not provide email by itself. Email works after the domain's DNS is configured with the required mail records.

Can I change a website's TLD later?

You can move to a new domain, but it requires redirects, updates to links and email, and careful migration to preserve traffic and trust.
