Choose .host when the shorter word completes the brand and the company sells hosting, infrastructure, cloud, or managed platform services. Choose .hosting only when spelling out the exact service improves the complete name enough to justify a much higher annual cost and a smaller registrar shortlist.

In the registrar snapshots checked on 16 August 2026, three years of standard .hosting registration cost $928.41 at Porkbun and $1,106.94 at Namecheap. The corresponding .host scenarios were $168.37 and $104.95. Namecheap's .host total relies on sale pricing, including a discounted renewal displayed at the time of research.

The suffix still does not decide the name. north.host, northhosting.com, hostnorth.com, and north.hosting have different length, rhythm, cost, availability, and conflict risk. Compare the exact obtainable addresses.

If the company will remain a hosting specialist, either ending can be accurate. If hosting is the first product in a wider infrastructure roadmap, .host is less explicit but still category-bound. A broad company ending may age better.

The advantage is literal reading. “Hosting” names the activity and industry directly. That can suit:

  • a hosting marketplace or directory;
  • an industry publication;
  • a provider whose exact brand phrase ends in “hosting”;
  • a campaign or service hub separate from a broader corporate site;
  • a business willing to carry a high recurring domain cost.

The cost is not a small footnote. Porkbun displayed .hosting at $309.47 per year. Namecheap displayed $310.98 for the first year, a $368.98 undiscounted registration reference, and $398.00 renewal. Dynadot displayed $321.22 for registration, renewal, and transfer.

The address is also longer. A ten-letter brand followed by .hosting can be clear but cumbersome in email, command-line examples, support calls, and small advertisements. Test the complete string rather than assuming the full word always improves comprehension.

5) Calculate three years before comparing promotions

6) Check registrar support before committing

Registrar availability differs even when both TLDs remain delegated and active.

Amazon Route 53's current .host documentation supports registration periods from one to ten years, transfers with an authorization code, privacy protection, domain locking, and DNSSEC.

Its .hosting documentation carries an explicit warning: Route 53 no longer accepts new .hosting registrations or transfers. AWS says it continues to support .hosting domains already registered there. Before buying, check:

  • whether the preferred registrar accepts new registrations;

A company can register its domain at one provider and run DNS, email, control panels, status pages, and customer workloads elsewhere. The .host or .hosting suffix does not require the company to use the registrar's hosting service.

This distinction is especially important for a hosting company. The primary domain may appear in:
